INSIDER SPORTS REPORT:

Back the Cardinals as a nice-sized underdog at the Dodgers.
This is basically a play against Brad Penny, who has been dreadful in his last three starts, going 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA and a 2.16 WHIP. He’s allowed 5, 5 and 10 runs in those three outings against the Mets, Brewers and Reds, getting shelled for 28 hits and eight walks while pitching a combined 16 2/3 innings. The Dodgers’ bats and bullpen did bail Penny out against the Reds on Monday, rallying for a 6-5 victory. But you can’t expect that to happen all the time.
Now, granted, Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse has had his own struggles at times this year. But he is coming off one of his better outings, a 5-4 win over the Rays as he gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks in six innings. It was the sixth time in 10 starts this year that Lohse has yielded two earned runs or fewer.
Bottom line: I just don’t trust Penny right now, and with the way he’s going, if I can get a quality offensive club like the Cardinals at this kind of plus price, I’ll take it.
