Two struggling offenses square off once again in this match up. The Reds have scored a total of 6 runs in the first 3 games of this 4 game series. The Astros haven't done much better, scoring 10 runs, while going 1-2 vs the Reds in the first 3 games. Houston looks to even it up tonight with Mike Hampton towing the rubber. Hampton has surprised everyone, including myself, by allowing only 3 earned runs and 8 hits in 11 innings to start the season. He will be opposed by Bronson Arroyo of the Reds, who is also off to a decent start by allowing 6 earned runs and 12 hits over 12 innings. One huge disparity in this game, is that the Reds are hitting .168 vs lefties on the season, and an uncanny .109 vs lefties on the road. Now, I know Mike Hampton hasn't pitched like an all star the past couple of seasons, but this is one of those stats, that you can't pass up. Don't forget, Hampton is known for swinging the hot bat, and is capable of plating runs. Let's side with Houston to even up this series, behind a solid outing from Hampton.

I will be siding with the Rays in this game. Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang was rocked by the Orioles in his first start of the season. He gave up 7 earned runs while walking 3 in only 3 innings of work. Kazmir started the season off with a solid outing against the Red Sox, allowing 1 earned run while scattering 5 hits over 6 innings. With A-Rod out, and Mark Teixeira possibly not playing due to a wrist injury, the Yankees may be hard pressed to score runs against Kazmir. Phoenix continues to struggle on the defensive side of the ball, allowing 8 of their last 10 opponents to score 110+ points a game. #743 Austin Peay Governors -1

3-Units (7:00 P.M. CST)

Not afraid to lay the small number with an Austin Peay team that has won 9 of the last 10 meetings between these two schools. Even though their playing at home, Jacksonville St. will be hard pressed to slow down the Governor's Drake Reed(22 PPG) and Wes Channels(17 PPG). Neither team is known for being solid on defense, so this could turn into a shootout. Jacksonville St. has lost 3 straight and 7 of its last 10 games and is 5-11 in conference play. Austin Peay on the other hand is 6-4 in their last 10 games, and is a solid 10-5 in conference play. I will go with history and the fact that the Governors are 8-2 after the spread in their last 10 road games.

#540 Central Florida Knights -12 1/2

Central Florida has been scoring at a torrid pace over their past 5 games, averaging 71 points an outing, while hitting 52% from beyond the 3 point line. Even more impressive is the fact that they shot 73% from downtown in their last game against Marshall, connecting on 11 of 15 from 3 point range. Central Florida games are turning out to be the Jermaine Taylor show. The Senior Guard is averaging 24 points and 5 rebounds a game.

SMU has lost 4 of their last 5 games, and 6 straight road games. To put it mildly, they have yet to win a road game this season! They are led by Freshman Guard Paul McCoy who is averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds a game. Center Bamba Fall leads all Mustangs with 7 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots a game.

This will be a total mismatch of major proportions. Central Florida is an impressive 10-2 at home with losses to Florida and Memphis, while SMU has yet to win on the road this year. SMU has recent road losses to both Rice and Marshall, two teams with overall losing records that happened to break losing streaks of two or more losses with wins over SMU. Twelve and a half points should be no problem for the Knights at home tonight.

Sacramento has had no problems coming into Conseco Fieldhouse and winning. In fact they have won 4 of the last 5 games in Indiana straight up. Now both teams will be trying to end consecutive losing streaks. Sacramento has lost 9 straight games when traveling, while Indiana has lost 4 straight at home. Sacramento lost a close game to Detroit on Friday night, despite having leading scorer Kevin Martin back in the lineup from an ankle injury. Martin went 4-15 from the field in his first game back, but should improve upon those numbers against an Indiana team that is ranked 27th in points allowed this season. Let's take the points with a Sacramento team that plays well in Conseco Fieldhouse.

#510 Virginia Tech Hokies -3

If you are not familiar with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, you do not know what you have been missing. This Challenge features some of the elite teams from both leagues going at it night after night with the winner being decided after 11 games have been played. The ACC has won EVERY Single Challenge dating back to its inception in 1999. Wisconsin has went 3-6 against ACC schools in the Challenge, while Virginia Tech has went 1-2 against Big Ten competition in the Challenge.

Wisconsin puts a 5-1 record and #25 ranking on the line against a Virginia Tech team that is 4-2 on the season. Wisconsin has been getting its wins by smothering opposing teams on defense, and playing just well enough on offense to put themselves in winning situations. They have played one ranked opponent in Connecticut(#2) losing that game by a score of 57-76. Wisconsin is led by Junior guard Trevon Hughes who is averaging 14 points a game, and Joe Krabbenhoft who is averaging 7 rebounds per outing.

Virginia Tech is also playing very efficiently on defense, with only one opponent(Seton Hall) shooting over 39% from the field against them on the season. They are led offensively by Sophomore Forward Jeff Allen and Senior Forward A.D. Vassalo both who are averaging 17 points a game. Virginia Tech has yet to play a ranked opponent, but both of their losses came against basketball powerhouses Xavier and Seton Hall, by a combined total of 5 points.

Wisconsin has a young team that is a work in progress. They will only get better with each game that they play. This young Badger team may be overwhelmed having to come into the Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia in a Nationally Televised ESPN event. Virginia Tech gets win #1 for the ACC in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge.

Take the Virginia Tech Hokies -3 for 4-Units!

Trends worth considering:

Badgers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.

Badgers are 3-6 SU all time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

#708 New York Knicks -2 1/2

Two very similar teams will be facing off against each other tonight in New York. Both New York and Miami are opening the season with new head coaches, both are coming off of very disappointing seasons, and both made key player acquisitions in the off season. New York added Donnie Walsh as team president late last season, he then added Mike D'Antoni in the off season as the Knicks new head coach. Miami's Erik Spoelstra will be making his NBA head coaching debut for the Heat. He not only is the youngest NBA head coach at 38, but he is also the first Philipino-American head coach in the history of the league. He started out as a Video Coordinator in 1995 and worked his way up through the ranks to a head coaching job. The Heat will be counting on Dwyane Wade to carry the team on his shoulders. After Wade, the talent level falls off, with Marion and rookie Beasley expected to make huge contributions. New York has several offensive minded players to throw at Miami, including Zach Randolf, Nate Robinson, and Jamal Crawford. The Knicks problems will be on the Defensive side of the ball, where they may be lacking at times on defense. Not to worry, Miami will be in the same boat so to speak. Miami managed just 15 wins last season, and although I expect them to be better this year, I don't see them being able to go on the road and pick up their first win of the season against this New York team that has went 5-1 straight up against the Heat the last 6 times these teams met. The Knicks definitely have a coaching edge, and although they don't have a Dwyane Wade type player, they do have more talent across the board.

Take the Knew York Knicks -2 1/2 for 2-Units.

#118 Northwestern Wildcats +1

Northwestern has had a week off to rest and prepare for this matchup with rival Michigan St. Last year Northwestern won at Michigan St. in a 48-41 shootout. Wildcat running back Tyrell Sutton missed that game with an injury, but quarterback C.J. Bacher improvised by throwing for a school record 520 yards with 5 passing touchdowns. Northwestern has won 2 of the last 3 meetings and 4 of the last 6 between these two schools. This season has seen much improvement from both defenses. Northwestern ranks 13th nationally in scoring defense while Michigan St. ranks 22nd. Northwestern leads the Big Ten with 17 sacks and may be able to get pressure on Spartan quarterback Brian Hoyer who is completing just 48% of his passes on the season. This will cause problems for a Spartan offense in third and long situations. The Spartans have been shorthanded in the secondary, and will have a hard time stopping the Northwestern offense, that will be able to run or throw pretty much at will. A very interesting trend for this game is that the Wildcats are 6-1 their last 7 games against the spread following a bye week. This is an indication that Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald is very efficient at getting his team prepared for the upcoming opponent when idle. The Spartans are also 0-4 against the spread in the last 4 meetings.

This is another one of those games that sharp money has effected in a huge way. Nearly 70% of the Public is on Tennessee in this game, but yet the Lines makers had to move line off of the 3. This is yet another clear indication that the sharp money is on Baltimore. Tennessee comes in with a solid 4-0 record, while Baltimore is 2-1 after falling apart in the 3rd quarter last week against the Steelers before finally giving way in a 23-20 overtime loss. Both of these teams are very good on the defensive side of the ball, and are at the tops in defensive numbers in both points and total yards allowed. Look for Baltimore to continue to try and run the ball and keep Flacco in 3rd and short situations. Flacco looked good on the road at Pittsburgh last week, getting his first touchdown pass of the season, and should settle in now. He was sacked 5 times last week and will face a fierce pass rush from Tennessee. The Ravens defense sacked Big Ben 3 times last week and should be able to put pressure on Titan quarterback Kerry Collins. The Ravens are 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 home games, while the underdog has cashed in 13 of the last 16 times these two teams have faced each other. I like our chances with the home team underdog with a very strong defense.

It' common knowledge that the strength of the Uconn Huskies is rushing the ball(5.68 yds per attempt), while the strength of the Louisville defense is shutting down the run.(1.88 yds per attempt). I would probably think that these two teams will probably meet somewhere in the middle in tonight's match up. Although it's still early in the season, Louisville seems to have a definite quarterback edge in this contest. Louisville's Hunter Cantwell has completed 58% of his passes, while throwing for 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while leading his team to a 2-1 record. Despite directing the team to a 4-0 record and completing 59% of his passes, Connecticut's Tyler Lorenzen has thrown just 1 touchdown and 6 interceptions on the season. Of course for Louisville to have any chance to win this game, they must shut down running sensation Donald Brown of the Huskies. Brown has rushed for 716 yards on 113 carries for a whopping 6.3 yard per attempt average. Louisville has a lesser known running back named Victor Anderson that is averaging 7.6 yards a carry in only 42 attempts on the season. He is part of a tandem of backs that Louisville will be using tonight in order to keep the Huskie defense on its heels. Connecticut likes to line up and run the ball straight at people and wear them down, and throw the ball only when necessary, while Louisville keeps you guessing as to what their intent may be. They tend mix the run and pass in very effectively, and should be able to take advantage of a Huskies defense that has been less than average against the pass. A couple of numbers stick out at me for this game. Number one is that the Huskies defense is allowing 15 first downs a game while the Cardinals defense is allowing 12 first downs a game. The other biggie is that the Cardinals are allowing opposing teams to convert on 3rd down just 26 % of the time, while the Huskies are allowing opposing teams to convert 36% of the time on 3rd down. All of this, despite the fact that the Huskies are allowing teams to score just 12 points a game compared to Louisville's 22 points a game allowed. Worth noting is that the Huskies are 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 road games against a team with a winning record, while the Cardinals are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games against teams with a winning record.

The Yankees still have a slim chance to make the playoffs, and in order to keep their shimmering hopes alive they must keep winning. They have won two in a row, but now have a series at home against a pretty good White Sox team that is also still battling for the playoffs. The White Sox and Twins are battling back and forth for the lead in the AL Central, with the White sox holding a slim 1 1/2 game lead after yesterday's double header sweep over the Tigers. The Yankees trail Boston by 9 with 13 games remaining for the American League Wild Card. The Yankees will send Alfredo Aceves to the mound for only his 2nd start of the season. Aceves allowed 1 run over 7 innings in his first career start against the Angels on Tuesday. He did pitch 5 innings of relief on the 4th of September, allowing 1 run over 5 innings in a loss to Tampa Bay. Aceves will be opposed by Mark Buehrle of the White Sox. Buehrle has allowed just 1 run over his last two starts while allowing just 10 hits which resulted in two White Sox victories. Even though he has pitched well of late, Buehrle has struggled when going against the Yankees. He has a 6.58 career Era against the Bronx Bombers, and the Yankees have a lifetime batting average of .329 against Buehrle. The White Sox also struggle when playing at Yankee Stadium, going 1-5 in their last 6 games in New York, while the White Sox are 0-4 in Buehrle's last 4 road starts. The Yankees are familiar with Buehrle, while the White Sox haven't seen Aceves, and it may take them several times through the rotation to before they chase him out of the game.

Although they are hitting just .258 against left handed pitchers on the season, they have come on strong against southpaws over their last 10 games, hitting .330 which has helped propel the Blue Jays to a ten game winning streak. They stand a good chance of getting to their 11th win in a row, with ace Roy Halladay starting on Wednesday night. Halladay has been phenomenal over his last 7 starts, giving up 2 or less runs in 6 of 7 games. The Blue Jays have won Halladays last 5 starts, and are looking to make it 6 straight after tonights game. Halladay will be opposed by Mark Buehrle of the White Sox. Buehrle has been off and on, over his last 4 starts, but the White Sox have went 5-1 over those games, thanks to a strong showing from the White Sox offense. When Buehrle is on , he is on, but when he is off, he struggles badly. He has given up 4 or more runs in 4 of his last 10 starts. I like my chances with the Blue Jays with their ace on the mound, and an 11 game winning streak on the line.

#176 Pittsburgh Panthers -13

Last season Pittsburgh had the nations top freshman running back in LeSean McCoy. He is a special player that looks to have an even better season this year. Many offensive injuries slowed down his production, but the offense looks to be the best that Wannstedt has fielded in his tenure as the Panthers head coach. The defense was one of the tops in the nation last season and looks to be even better this year. Not only are they experienced, but they are deep at nearly every position. Everyone knows that Bowling Green will come out throwing the ball. They return nearly all their skill position players, but have a question mark with three new starters on the offensive line. Defense was a problem for Bowling Green last season, with opposing teams scoring 30+ points seven different times. They are returning all four starters in the secondary, but have a group of small linebackers that will have trouble stopping the Pittsburgh running game. You can rest assured that Panthers coach Wannstedt watched some tape of how Tulsa ripped Bowling Green 63-7 last season in the GMAC Bowl. Tulsa held them to only 7 points, with just an average defense to end the Falcons season. Pittsburgh does not have an average defense, in fact they a very good defense that will be able to get pressure up the middle and off the ends.

The Marlins have owned the Cubs over the last 2 seasons going 12-1 in the 13 meetings. The Cubs starter Jason Marquis is 1-3 with a hefty 8.14 ERA versus the Marlins since 2005. In 9 starts at home Marquis has posted a lofty 5.44 ERA. Chicago is 1-5 in their last 6 versus a right-handed starting pitcher. The Florida starter Rick VandenHurk seems to have benefitted from his demotion to the minors earlier this season. In his first start since his promotion VandenHurk threw 5.0 innings of no hit ball. The only negative was his 5 walks that resulting in him getting pulled from the game because of his pitch count. The Marlins are 8-2 in the last 10 as an underdog and 6-2 on the road this season in day games versus a right-handed starting pitcher. Play on the Florida Marlins as an underdog for my selection of the day.

A quick check of the numbers shows Maholm with an 8-2 mark at home with a 3.33 ERA this season while Peavy is 3-5 away with 4.53 ERA. Maholm's home ERA is more than a full run better than his road ERA while Peavy's road ERA is more than 3 runs higher than his home ERA. With Maholm 4-1 in days starts this season, look for Pittsburgh to surprise San Diego here this afternoon.

New team, new city for Randy Wolf, who moves over from the Padres to the Astros. Wolf has pitched more like a sheep this season, going 6-10 with a 4.74 era. On the road the Padres lost nine of his 10 stars and Wolf had a 6.63 era. Jeff Suppan goes for the Brewers today and while he's 5-6 on the season with a 4.65 era, he historically has had his troubles with the Astros. Suppan is 2-6 in his career against the Astros with a 4.83 era and a 3.08 opponent batting average. We don't expect to see either of these pitchers last long in today's contest. Take the OVER

It's not exactly wise to be asking the Braves to do anything positive on the road, but I think they have a good shot today. Campillo continues to provide mostly quality efforts and I prefer him to Blanton, who I believe the Phillies badly overpaid for in their deal with the A's (especially when considering how little the competition have been giving up in other deals). The Braves really blew on yesterday, coughing up a huge lead, but I'll go with them to rebound and score a win here against the Phillies.

Talk about a guy wanting to stay in the Majors, and not be demoted!!! Justin Masterson was supposed to be filling in for injured Red Sox pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Bartolo Colon. The Red Sox coaching staff keep waiting for Masterson to make a mistake, and he keeps pitching to perfection. He has allowed 2 runs or less in 4 of his 6 starts this season, and has made it to the 6th inning in 5 of 6 starts. Masterson is holding opposing teams to a .176 batting average while maintaining excellent control with a 1.08 whip on the season. He will be opposed by Arizona's Doug Davis. Davis has also been a huge success story on the season, after having thyroid cancer surgery on May 23rd. His numbers for the season, give no indication of any time off whatsoever. He allowed 1 earned run over his last 2 starts to American League teams Oakland and Kansas City, which both happened to be home games at Arizona. He has been a little less effective in road games, with the Diamondbacks going 1-3 in his road starts. The Diamondbacks are hitting .212 and scoring 2.17 runs a game vs righties over their last 5 games, while the Red Sox are hitting .255 and scoring 3.21 runs a game vs lefties over their last 5. Arizona has scored a total of 10 runs over their last 5 games, and may have trouble with sinker ball pitcher Justin Masterson tonight.
